Families from across the Delaware Valley packed Atlantic City for Labor Day, soaking up the final hours of the holiday weekend on the beach, boardwalk, and local attractions before making the trip home.
A Day at the Beach
Miranda Faroni of Roxborough called the day “absolutely beautiful.” Her family spent time along the shoreline, building sandcastles with fresh buckets despite choppy waters.
“We went and got new buckets to build sandcastles. The water was very rough and the current was a little scary, but it was fun,” Faroni said.
Boardwalk Strolls and Shore Favorites
Other visitors opted for the boardwalk experience, taking in the scenery and stopping at food stands for classic shore fare.
“Just enjoy the boards and enjoy the lovely weather,” said Ruth Stevens Duncker of Williamstown.
Families also paused to play games and grab snacks at the many stands lining the way.
Heading Home
As Labor Day wound down, travelers prepared for the drive back. Aerial footage showed only minor congestion on northbound Route 42, a relief for many heading out of the city.
Van Truong of South Philadelphia felt the traffic situation was manageable.
“I thought it was going to be really busy for Labor Day, but I feel it’s OK,” Truong said.
Jane Baumgardner of Berwyn offered advice for drivers navigating the getaway.
“There’s always little jams getting onto the AC Expressway, but it evens out, and if people just be civil and don’t pass and get there quicker, it makes it better for all of us,” Baumgardner said.
The Kids’ Take
For some younger travelers, the ride home posed no concern at all.
- One boy shrugged off the traffic, saying, “I don’t really care about traffic.”
- Another child had a simple plan: “I’m going to take a nap.”
