A 53-year-old Key Largo man facing attempted murder charges abandoned his own trial and fled the country, only to be apprehended in Mexico days later.
Armando Lopez was standing trial for attempted murder and several additional serious felony charges at the Plantation Key courthouse when he failed to appear on Friday. Rather than fulfilling his legal obligation to remain present throughout the proceedings, Lopez made the deliberate decision to absent himself from court without authorization.
Rather than concealing himself locally, Lopez pursued a far more audacious course of action. Detectives from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office tracked his movements across the country to the Texas-Mexico border. Recognizing that their defendant had crossed into foreign territory, local detectives transferred jurisdiction to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Federal marshals assumed the pursuit and tracked Lopez into Mexico, bringing his brief flight to an end on October 6, 2026.
“Thank you to the hardworking men and women of the Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and all of our law enforcement partners for getting this dangerous criminal off the streets,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay.
Lopez’s attempt to evade justice secured him approximately four days of freedom before authorities closed in. His return to court proceedings will take place under considerably more stringent supervision, as officials work to ensure the attempted murder case moves forward without further disruption.
